Even when things don't go as planned, road trips tend to lead to life changing experiences. For me, that's typically when my most unforgettable memories seem to come about. There’s just something about being on the open road that invigorates the soul and gets you feeling connected to the magic of the universe... ahhhh, with that said, here are five unforgettable road trips to add to your bucket list.
East Coast of Australia
Australia has some of the prettiest beaches in the world and its famed East Coast is home to places like Bondi Beach, Angourie, Byron Bay, and The Great Barrier Reef. You could easily spend a month or longer taking in the entire eastern coast, so it’s best to pick a few favorites if you only have a couple of weeks. Tons of travelers end up buying cars to make the trip as they do it in an extended time period and it ends up being cheaper than a rental, so if time is on your side, grab yourself a van. There's well-stocked market to purchase from and a list of buyers waiting to sell to when you've had your fill.
Pacific Coast Highway - San Francisco To San Diego
A road trip on the Pacific Coast Highway along the spectacular Pacific is the quintessential American road trip. A drive across this 655 miles scenic highway demands you witness it's sweeping beaches, stunning coastal villages, untouched natural beauty and wine making districts. It's recommended to do this from North to South as you'll be one lane closer to the ocean and have better views as you come over the rolling hills from that side of the road. Go everywhere in between San Francisco and San Diego including Los Angeles, Las Vegas and the National Parks. The coast can be done in one or two days, but painfully so as it's hard to move along so quickly. Do set aside two weeks if you want to cover everything and feel like you did it Cali proper.
Garden Route - Durban To Capetown, South Africa
Extending from Mosel bay in the Western Cape to the Storms River in the Eastern cape, this 300 kilometers (186 miles) scenic route has some seriously striking coastline with exotic beaches on one side and vineyards climbing incredible mountains on the other. Along the way, you also witness some amazing indigenous forests, breathtaking mountains, picture perfect coastal bays, as well as some of the most protected marine and wildlife areas of South Africa. Seriously, give it a google... just wow.
With such a diverse range of sights to stop you in your tracks, plan for at least 7 days on this route. South African city centers, nature trails, valley hikes, mountain climbing, beach walks and scuba diving await.
The Himalayan Road Trip - Leh To Manali
Driving on top of the highest motorable road in the world is reason enough to go for this road trip. Snow clad mountains, colorful monasteries, breathtaking scenery and the unpredictable weather makes this one of the most thrilling road trips of all time. Not to mention you can easily buy a vehicle to drive it for under $500.
Plan your trip between June to September when the Rohtang Pass is open and the climate is more ideal. Give yourself at least 7 days and take the route from Leh to Manali for better acclimatization to the mountain altitude.
Romantic Road - Germany
The 350 kilometers (220 miles) route between Fussen and Wurzburg in Bavaria, Germany, connects a number of picturesque towns and fairytale castles. As a marketing gimmick post World War 2, Bavaria named this old trade route the Romantic Road to boost the tourism and they nailed it.
Rent a car for this drive and shoot for traveling in late September or early October so you can attend Oktoberfest in Munich along the way. Start from Fussen with the fairytale Neuschwanstein Castle and travel north to Wurzburg. Other recommended pitstops are the walled towns of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Dinkelsbuehl and Noerdlingen. Truly magical stuff.
